I found all three of these podcasts/essays to be very influential. I think its so impressive how people can take bad situations and try to make them as good as they possibly can. That was the idea I took away from the second and third essays. I was impressed that Michael was able to turn his life from one on dangerous streets, breaking the law, into one where he was educated in a different way. He made something out of himself, and turned him into something that other people would admire and look up to.
I also think that it is so cool to read about people who came over to our country and had to work for everything they have. "Nona" sounded so intelligent and was someone that I would like to have known. I can't believe she knew so many languages. Nowadays most of us only know 1 and then maybe speak a little bit of another. She sounded like an incredible lady who knew so much and was one that could educate other people!
The first podcast on martial arts was really cool. I took martial arts when I was younger and one thing we were always told was that we aren't learning so that we are good fighters. We are learning to know how to protect ourselves when needed. I found it interesting that the teacher was similar to this. He learns it in order to fight back not literally fight people. I think that this is a great message to send to the students, to teach them other ways to release their frustrations than on other people.
